CranioSacral Therapy
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on therapeutic approach that focuses on the craniosacral system—the connective tissues and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding and protecting the brain and spinal cord. By using light, precise touch, CranioSacral Therapy is designed to identify areas of tension and restriction within the body and encourage greater ease and balance within the nervous system.

What Can I Expect From a CranioSacral Therapy Session?
A CST session is designed to be gentle, relaxing, and individualized to your specific needs. At The Cortex Brain & Spine Center in Walnut Creek, sessions take place in a quiet, comfortable, and private environment where you can fully relax.
What Happens During a CranioSacral Therapy Session?
For adults, a typical CranioSacral Therapy appointment lasts approximately 60 minutes. You remain fully clothed and lie comfortably on a treatment table. Dr. Katherine will position herself around the table and use gentle, precise contact at different areas of the head, neck, spine, torso, and limbs.
Light pressure and supportive techniques may be used to address areas of tension and restriction and encourage relaxation throughout the body. She may also gently support portions of your spine or limbs as part of the session.
Sessions for children are typically shorter and may last approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on the child's age, comfort level, and individual needs.
What Does CranioSacral Therapy Feel Like?
Everyone experiences CranioSacral Therapy differently. Many patients describe the treatment as deeply relaxing and calming. Others may notice subtle sensations such as warmth, gentle movement, lightness, or a feeling of tension gradually releasing.
Some individuals may become very relaxed during treatment and even fall asleep. Others may experience increased awareness of areas of tension within their body.
Your experience is unique, and there is no specific sensation you need to feel for a session to be beneficial.
SomatoEmotional Release®
Some individuals may experience memories, emotions, or sensations associated with previous physical or emotional stress during a CranioSacral Therapy session. The Upledger Institute refers to this process as SomatoEmotional Release®.
When this occurs, your practitioner provides a supportive environment while allowing you to process your experience at your own pace. Not everyone experiences this during treatment, and it is not a required part of CranioSacral Therapy.
What Happens After CranioSacral Therapy?
Following a session, your body may continue to respond to the gentle techniques used during treatment. You may notice changes in how your body feels, moves, or relaxes as you return to your normal activities.
Some people experience a period of adjustment as their body responds to treatment. This may include increased relaxation, changes in mood, temporary changes in body awareness, or simply a continued sense of calm.
There is no single response that is considered "normal." Every nervous system and every body is different, which is why your response to CranioSacral Therapy may differ from someone else's.
How Many CranioSacral Therapy Sessions Will I Need?
Because every person responds differently to CranioSacral Therapy, there is no standard number of sessions that applies to everyone.
Some individuals may notice a difference after a single session, while others may benefit from a series of sessions depending on their goals and individual circumstances. Dr. Katherine will work with you to determine an appropriate approach based on your needs and response to care.
At The Cortex Brain & Spine Center, our goal is to provide individualized CranioSacral Therapy in Walnut Creek in a comfortable, supportive environment while complementing our broader approach to brain, spine, and nervous system care.
