Therapeutic Modalities

Chiropractic functional neurology uses non-invasive, neuroplasticity-based therapies to restore and optimize brain/ nervous system function. Care is tailored to each individual and may include vestibular and visual rehabilitation, sensorimotor training, sensory stimulation, and targeted chiropractic adjustments to enhance communication between the body and brain.  Additional support, include cognitive exercises, and advanced neuromodulation techniques Together, these approaches help improve balance, coordination, cognition, and overall neurological performance while promoting lasting neural adaptation.

Therapies offered at The Cortex are also available to help relax the musculoskeletal system—such as heat, ice, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound. They are often used prior to adjustments to improve comfort and effectiveness.

Low-Level Laser Therapy

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), also known as cold laser therapy, utilizes targeted light wavelengths to stimulate cellular activity without generating heat. Unlike high-powered surgical lasers, LLLT is a gentle, non-invasive, and safe treatment designed to enhance the body’s natural healing response. At Cortex Brain & Spine Center, we use Erchonia FDA-cleared laser technology, delivering precise, neurologically-focused care to support optimal brain function, recovery, and overall wellness.

Peripheral and Cranial Nerve Stimulation

Non-invasive neuromodulation therapies designed to optimize brain function. These cutting-edge techniques promote neuroplasticity, enhance brain connectivity, and support recovery from conditions such as chronic pain, anxiety, and post-stroke dysfunction.

By targeting key neural pathways—including the trigeminal and peripheral nerves—PNS and CNS therapies help regulate the autonomic nervous system, improve brain-body communication, and activate both brainstem and cortical regions. This precise, brain-based approach allows us to improve cognitive performance, restore neurological balance, and accelerate long-term healing outcomes.

Neuro Sensorimotor Integrator (NSI)

The NSI is an advanced, computer-based neurological rehabilitation system featuring a large, interactive touchscreen to assess and enhance brain performance. This innovative technology is designed to improve how the brain integrates sensory input with motor output, supporting optimal neurological function.

Commonly used in functional neurology care, this system helps enhance eye tracking, hand-eye coordination, reaction time, and balance. It is especially effective for patients recovering from concussions, strokes, and vestibular disorders, promoting faster recovery, improved cognitive processing, and long-term neurological resilience.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation

Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS) specifically activates the parasympathetic “rest and digest” system, helping reset the nervous system, reduce stress, and improve symptoms like anxiety, dysautonomia, and digestive issues. Using advanced technology from Hoolest, this approach promotes faster recovery, improved balance, and long-term wellness.

At Cortex, we use non-invasive nerve stimulation therapies to enhance neuroplasticity, improve motor recovery, and optimize brain function. By targeting key nerves—including the vagus, tibial, and trigeminal—this therapy supports better brain-body communication and neurological healing.

Interferential Current

Interferential Current (IFC) Therapy is used as a non-invasive modality to support pain relief and accelerate healing. This advanced therapy delivers gentle electrical stimulation to injured or tight tissues, helping to reduce discomfort and restore normal function.

IFC therapy enhances the body’s natural healing response by improving circulation, decreasing inflammation, and stimulating the release of healing-promoting hormones. This targeted approach helps relieve pain, improve mobility, and support faster recovery for optimal musculoskeletal and neurological health.

Ultrasound

Therapeutic ultrasound is a non-invasive treatment designed to promote deep tissue healing and pain relief. It uses targeted sound waves to create gentle vibrations that increase circulation, reduce inflammation, and enhance cellular metabolism.

This therapy also stimulates cellular activity to accelerate the body’s natural healing process. It is commonly used to treat musculoskeletal conditions such as pain, soft tissue injuries, and muscle spasms—supporting faster recovery and improved mobility.

Temperature Therapy: Ice/heat

At Cortex, we incorporate targeted icing and heat therapy to enhance the effectiveness of your chiropractic adjustments and support optimal recovery.

Cold therapy (ice packs) is used prior to an adjustment to help reduce inflammation and calm irritated tissues. For best at home results, apply ice for no more than 20 minutes per hour and always use a barrier to protect the skin.

Heat therapy is selectively used to relax muscles and improve tissue mobility before an adjustment. However, heat should be avoided in acute injuries, as it may temporarily feel soothing but can increase inflammation and slow the healing process.
